Poet will read from her new book “Beautiful Fire” and answer questions from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, March 18, in Ballroom B of the Memorial Student Center at Ͽ.
Ash, who teaches English at the University of Hartford and is a native of Cameroon, also will visit an Honors Composition and Creative Writing class on campus during her visit.
The event, to help celebrate Black History Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March), is sponsored by the Literature Committee, Multicultural Student Services and the Provost’s Office at Ͽ.
“Beautiful Fire” has three sections, Call Me Woman, Nuggets of Passion and Politics of Being. The poems address topics such as womanhood, love relationships and daily life through the lens of personal freedoms.
“The inspired and well-crafted poetry of Joyce Ash is a feast of life deepened and intensified through her poetic search for meaning,” said Israeli poet Amir Or. “Here is a poet whose every movement into language challenges us out of our sentimental approaches to living.”
Ash also wrote the book of poems “A Basket of Flaming Ashes.”
She has spoken about her poetry in nine countries, has been published in several international anthologies and has had her work translated into five languages.
