Interior design camp, industry-standard software introduces campers to career paths in residential, commercial design

Every space has its own function, whether it’s an educational studio calling on students to advance their design skills and create a space optimal for learning, or a residential studio where they’re tasked with designing a cozy living room inviting friends to sit and stay awhile. For four days in June, area high school students created their own spaces in the Interior Design: Creating Spaces That Inspire Camp at ��Ͽ� Polytechnic.

In three interior design labs within the Applied Arts Building, the campers discovered how design influences the way people live, work and connect. From sketching, mood boards and space planning to color, lighting and design conceptualization, they created projects inspired by album covers, designing great rooms that encompassed kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms for clients of their choosing.

“This is a similar project that I give to my second-year students in their first interior design studio course. The young campers practiced exactly what the college students learn. They chose their album cover and drew from the visual or emotional aspects to design their space,” said interior design Assistant Professor Nicolette Brehm, the camp instructor.

They also explored both residential and commercial interiors and gained insight into the numerous career paths in interior design. “There are many career pathways outside of residential design – this is what many students come in thinking of. But there are so many great opportunities in commercial design, furniture and more,” Brehm said.

The interior design campers are just some of the more than 500 youths from around the region and country who are traveling to ��Ͽ� Polytechnic to join the Middle School STEAM and High School STEAM experiences this summer.

Introducing young campers to career paths in science, technology, engineering, and art and design fits hand-in-hand with ��Ͽ� Polytechnic’s mission of preparing its students for the workforce, as 99% of recent graduates were employed or furthering their education within six months of graduation.

Using music to create spaces that inspire

With interests in architecture and design, the high school students enjoyed creating floor plans, space planning and selecting color palettes. “I was surprised by how learning that interior design is more than just choosing paint colors. It involves a lot of technical work. You also have to think about the aspects you don’t see, like electrical and plumbing,” said one of the campers.

For their unique spaces, campers drew inspiration from the following album covers:

The Alchemist’s “Yacht Rock 2,” which pictures a bird’s-eye view of a white boat floating in a sandy ocean cove. Their great room reflected feelings of calmness, with marble countertops, sea-blue tile backsplashes and a boat-shaped bookshelf. A large sofa faced a ceiling-to-floor indoor water feature and overlooked panoramic ocean views.
SZA’s “Good Days,” where the artist is sitting on a diving board over a choppy, blue sea. Their great room featured a seating area with a fireplace adorned in deep blue tiles, with a pattern that mimicked the waves. The contrast of fire and water – warmth blended with cool colors – was striking.

Their great room felt playful, with a center terrarium of tropical plants, a rounded green sofa covered in colorful pillows, statues of various animals and a piano against a brightly patterned wall.

As the campers thought about their great rooms, they first needed to sketch out their floor plans, practicing drawing in 1/4 scale, in which 1/4 inch on paper is equal to one foot in real life. With access to the interior design Materials Lab, the campers selected tiles, flooring, wood and fabric samples to add to their materials palettes, or mood boards. Items within the lab are donated by interior design vendors and alumni.

With Revit, an architectural design software used by university students and industry professionals, they created 3D renderings of their floor plans. Through Architextures.org, they selected digital materials to represent items on their materials palettes. The website allowed them to select tints, tones, shapes and patterns of tiles, wood, stone, wallpaper and more to integrate into their Revit models.

They also referred to industry websites, such as Bernhardt Design, Haworth, Herman Miller, and BIM Object, to search for furniture and décor accessories and downloaded 3D models of the pieces to bring into their own models.

Teaching Assistant Colby Greene, a human development and family studies student, joined the campers in creating her own great room, learning interior design skills alongside them. “I’ve worked as a nanny for eight years, and I like working with kids. This is my internship, and I’ve learned a lot of new skills,” she said.

The campers presented their digital floor plans and materials palettes to each other, learning to communicate their ideas clearly with their peers, before presenting to families and supporters during the Camper Showcase, which concluded the camp.

Art & Design: Claymation, comics, game design, fashion, cinema production and drawing.

The STEAM programs are sponsored by the Menomonie, Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire school districts, the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin, Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, the National Science Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Xcel Energy and the ��Ͽ� Foundation & Alumni Association, in partnership with Continuing Education & Conferences.

��Ͽ� Polytechnic’s interior design program is part of the School of Art & Design, which also offers bachelor’s degrees in animation and digital media; game design and development-art; graphic design and interactive media; illustration; industrial and product design; studio art; arts administration and entrepreneurship; fashion design and development; and video production; and an M.F.A. in design. ��Ͽ� also has a new program in game and media studies.

On a cloudy Tuesday morning, eight middle school Construction Pathways campers with ��Ͽ� Polytechnic’s summer STEAM experience watched a crane lift an air conditioning unit onto the new Aspirus Clinic that is being built in Chippewa Falls.

The site tour, led by the Boldt Company, introduced the campers to different career opportunities in the construction industry, including project management, skilled trades, labor, engineering, safety, and more, as well as what being a construction management student at ��Ͽ� Polytechnic might be like.

“Students gained a better understanding of how a construction site operates with a behind-the-scenes look at how projects are planned, built and managed from the ground up. They discovered career paths in construction, woodworking and other skilled trades they may be interested in pursuing in the future,” said technology education senior Annika Schlueter, who taught the camp.

The construction campers are just some of the more than 500 children from around the region and country who are traveling to ��Ͽ� Polytechnic to join the Middle School STEAM and High School STEAM week-long experiences this summer.

Introducing young campers to career paths in science, technology, engineering, and art and design fits hand-in-hand with ��Ͽ� Polytechnic’s mission of preparing its students for the workforce, as 99% of recent graduates were employed or furthering their education within six months of graduation.

New experiences in the Woods Lab

In the Jarvis Hall Wood Prototyping Lab, the campers created their own wooden cutting boards, crafted from black walnut, ash, cherry, and maple, and personalized them with laser engraving technology.

Through the hands-on project, they learned foundational skills in woodworking, like tool safety and how projects are designed, managed and completed from start to finish. They used a full range of the lab’s machine, including table saws, routers, an overhead sander, a CNC (computer numerical control) machine and a laser engraver.

“Along with these hard skills, they developed important life skills like teamwork, communication, problem-solving, responsibility and time management,” Schlueter said. “Students gained skills they can use both in their future careers and in their everyday lives. By completing projects and working through challenges, they built confidence and gained valuable skills that will benefit them long after the class is over.”

Most of the campers had done small woodworking projects before, but using the CNC machine was an all new experience. Levi Ryan, who traveled from Texas to attend the camp, didn’t even know the machine existed. “Seeing what all of the different machines can do was the best part,” he said.

Caleb Larson, of Baldwin, joined the camp to be able to work with his hands. He enjoyed “seeing all of the work come together, especially at the construction site visit.”

While waiting for glue to dry or for the CNC machine or laser engraver to be available or for classmates to complete the sanding process on their cutting boards, there was time for extra projects.

“Keeping the kids busy was the hardest part,” Schlueter said. “We did a lot of additional projects on the fly, like resin-pour coasters and keychains, and other laser-engraved wood designs as gifts.”

Prepared to lead in the classroom

Originally, the STEAM construction camp was going to be taught by engineering technology Assistant Professor Kevin Dietsche, but his schedule did not line up, so he offered the camp to Schlueter. Schlueter, who serves as a lab assistant in the Woods Lab, has completed her pre-student teaching and will begin student teaching next spring. The construction camp was her first experience leading a classroom.

Marrissa Haglund, who also serves as a lab assistant, was asked to be a teaching assistant for the camp. Haglund fell in love with the Woods Lab after taking a couple of engineering technology courses. She graduated in May with a B.S. in business administration.

“This opportunity has given me confidence, experience, and application in my field, and I think it is a great program for the students,” Schlueter said. “This camp not only offered me technical experience but also a lot of soft skills with coordination, communication and organization. I did a lot of budgeting and planning to get ready for the camp, so it could be as time-effective as possible. I’m very thankful that I was given the opportunity to be the instructor.”

Robotics, cinema students have hands-on experiences in science, engineering, animation, marketing, design

All through the summer, more than 300 elementary, middle and high school students from around the Midwest are experiencing what it’s like to be a student at ��Ͽ�.

In hands-on learning lab and studio experiences led by faculty and university students, they are discovering career paths in science, technology, engineering, and art and design during ��Ͽ�’s Summer STEAM Experience and Junior STEAM Experience.

The one- to two-week-long camps – several of them brand-new – highlight the value of creativity and critical thinking with activities in drones, genetics, construction, interior design and architecture, plastics engineering, entrepreneurship and more.

Two of the new camps for high school students – Robotics-Inspired STEAM Exploration (RISE) Camp and Unspooled Cinema Camp – introduced them not only to what a career in videography and engineering would be like but also gave them a glimpse into film festivals and youth robotics organizations.

“��Ͽ� put together a fantastic program. As a parent, I was thrilled with the program’s organization, communication, facilities and services. We were also thoroughly impressed with the academic portion of the camps. We recommend STEAM camps to everyone we know,” said Nicole Anspach, whose two children attended this summer.

Registration for STEAM and Junior STEAM Experience is still open for upcoming camps. STEAM students showcase their projects on the final day of camp and share critiques and ideas.

Robotics-Inspired STEAM Exploration (RISE) Camp

Meanwhile, across campus in the Jarvis Hall Science Wing, robots in various stages of development roved up and down the hall. Five teams of RISE campers were led by ��Ͽ� engineering technology students Holly Hultman and Payton Eskildsen, and technology education student Ryder Bendixen.

Following Robits by AndyMark kit instructions, which are similar to an advanced LEGO kit, the teams constructed and customized motorized robots with retractable arms. They used REV Hardware block-based programming and created individually designed 3D-printed claws for the arms, with a goal to design the claws better than the provided kit, said Bendixen, of Mukwonago.

Hultman, of St. Michael, Minnesota; and Eskildsen, of Waupaca, built the RISE curriculum and were inspired by STEPS for Girls and FIRST Tech Challenge. The camp fosters curiosity, innovation and inclusivity in STEAM. It was pilot-tested by middle and high school students from ��Ͽ�’s First Robotics team, STORM, last spring semester.

With the help of Cassie Kopp, ��Ͽ�’s photo and video minor adviser, the teams used Canva to craft branding and logos. They learned simple webpage development and media skills, documented their design journey with photos and videos, and created graphic designs for social media posts to market their brands.

Bendixen designed the campers’ final competition. The five teams were assigned a series of color-coded game pieces placed within a 12-by-12-foot arena. They maneuvered their robots around obstacles, using the claws to collect as many pieces as they could and then deposit the pieces in a designated bin.

One team, branded The Gear Heads, designed a longer claw than what the kit offered, with a goal to extend their robot’s reach farther than the original design. They also added a scalloped design to the inner edge of the claw and an arrow-shaped point at the end for an added pincer feature.

The Gear Heads – Leo Rice from McKinley Tech High School, Aiden Pickard from Glenwood City High School, and Mason Hamlin from Grantsburg High School – tested the claws’ grip on Aiden’s phone and recorded a short video of their success. They learned, however, that moving the robot with the programmed joystick takes a little finesse, as Aiden popped a wheely with it and the robot flipped backward.

“I really wanted to give robotics a try. I hadn’t thought about marketing before, but it’s a valuable skill, too,” Leo said.

A second team – Terra-Bit Foundations – took on the challenge of adding color sensors to their robot, when Bendixen gave the teams the option to use more advanced programming elements. The team was Mathew Snavely from Menomonie, Henry Krall from Madison West, Henry Behnke from Eau Claire, and Jasper Gonyea from Elk Mound. They added rubber bands to the Terra-Bit’s claws for added grip.

“Hopefully, in the competition, the sensor sees the color we tell it to, and the claw recognizes which game pieces to pick up. If a different color appears in front of the sensor, it won’t detect the piece, and the claw won’t extend,” said Mathew.

This is Mathew’s fourth summer attending a STEAM camp, but the RISE camp is his first robotics experience. “The block-based programming is paired with Java, but it’s simpler. The visual program is easier to read than the script,” he said.

Unspooled Cinema Camp

Equipped with industry-standard tools and techniques, 10 students brought their short films to life on the big screen in the Unspooled Film & Animation Camp. The camp is inspired by ��Ͽ�’s annual Unspooled Film and Animation Festival, a juried event featuring films and animations by regional and international independent storytellers.

Led by video production Assistant Professor Jonathan Wheeler, they began by writing narratives and learning video production fundamentals, like shooting, editing and lighting effects.

They then planned and composed shots before stepping in front of the green screen in the Motion Capture Studio in Micheels Hall. Their films blended live action, animation, and motion graphics, and were screened on the last day of the camp.

While ��Ͽ� has hosted video-related STEAM camps in the past, this was the first year these camps carried the “Unspooled” name and delved so deeply into both video production and 2D animation, Wheeler said.

Wheeler aimed to get the students to think like designers who would learn the technical skills needed to pursue a creative process rather than simply waiting around for inspiration to strike. “Students need only a story to tell. If they have an interest in sharing their unique perspectives with an audience, then we can help them craft an engaging story. I want them to make a thing they can take with them,” and potentially enter a film festival, Wheeler said.

“I want Stout to be a place that generates a creative community,” he added. And a creative community coalesced among the Unspooled camp participants.

Teddy Fountain, from Chicago, worked with two other students on a comedic short called “Hamster War,” in which an owner’s failure to feed his pets leads to dire consequences. Fountain said he enjoyed learning about “the beginning processes of coming up with an idea, and also how to use professional software,” such as Adobe Premiere and Toon Boom.

“They have really nice tech in the room,” added Denim Schemenauer, from Eau Claire, who was collaborating on the film with Fountain and Jack Pick, also of Eau Claire. “I’ve never drawn on a tablet used for drawing, which is really nice.”

Elsewhere in the lab, another trio worked on a short film called “Panic Attack,” which interpreted its title with a blend of moody live-action and animation featuring shadowy, silhouetted creatures.

One of the “Panic Attack” filmmakers, Asher Angus-Huebner from Eau Claire, attended a different STEAM camp at ��Ͽ� the previous summer. This year, Angus-Huebner signed up for Unspooled to explore her artistic interests. “I want a career in art, I just don’t know what my thing is yet,” she said. “I’ve been wanting to try animation because I think it’s just such an interesting and unique thing.”

One of her collaborators, Emily Paul, from Germantown, had a similar goal for the camp. “I know I want to do something with art, but there are multiple fields that involve art, and I just want to narrow it down,” she said.

��Ͽ�’s STEAM camps are sponsored by the Menomonie, Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire school districts; Parker; and the Xcel Energy Foundation, in partnership with Continuing Education and Conferences, a unit of Ed ucational Pathways and Outreach.

��Ͽ� Athletics is offering multiple summer youth sports camps led by university coaches, staff and student athletes. Camps include basketball, football, flag football, gymnastics, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, track, volleyball and dance.

Stout Adventures’ Youth Climbing League offers introductory activities, designed to empower kids ages 6 to 12. Experienced instructors lead activities for all skill levels. An upcoming session is scheduled for Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will be held from July 22 to Aug. 27.

STEAM camps offer nearly 275 area middle, high school students hands-on preview of education at ��Ͽ�goersab July 2, 2024

For two weeks in June, 118 area high school students stepped into campus labs at ��Ͽ� and learned what it’s like to be a student at Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University.

In hands-on learning experiences led by faculty, they discovered career paths in science, technology, engineering, and art and design during ��Ͽ�’s Summer STEAM Experience.

The weeklong camps highlight the value of creativity and critical thinking in genetics; graphic design and printmaking; fashion; film making; metalwork; video game design and other disciplines.

Students interested in the cellular makeup of the human body and the fashions that cover it joined Professor Mike Bessert in a Jarvis Hall Science Wing biology lab and Lecturer Sarah Eileen Smith in the Maker's Lab in Fryklund Hall.

In Bessert’s Microbiology: Genetics and DNA Analysis camp, 19 students used a diverse array of lab technology to gain skillsets they can apply in biochemistry, forensics or health fields.

They collected DNA field specimens and used various techniques to copy and study DNA and discover how scientists solve problems within DNA.

“This camp gives the students a taste of what it’s like to be a biology student here at Stout,” said Bessert, program director of P.S.M. conservation biology. “Similar to the Molecular Cell Biology college course, the goal is for them to become familiar with some of the most prominently used DNA extraction and quantifying techniques used in the field.”

In the Fashion Drawing and Draping camp with Smith, interim program director of fashion design and development, 10 students brought their fashion designs to life.

Their hands-on introduction to patternmaking included draping fabric on 3D dress forms and sketching professional fashion figures.

“They’re all doing great,” Smith said. “They’re doing exactly what our first-year fashion students practice in the Pattern Development course in their first week at Stout.”

Nearly 115 students entering grades six to eight will join the Junior STEAM Experience this summer, a series of specialized camps with hands-on experiences in Chain Making, Fashion Design Drawing, Storytelling and Video Production. Thirty-eight students will participate in a new Video Game Design Week.

Two steps closer to their careers in genetics and forensics

On the third day of camp, after collecting samples of their own hair follicles, Bessert walked his students through a two-step polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, optimization technique – a gradient thermal cycle to find the perfect temperature to view the strongest signal of DNA markers, or alleles, in the human genome.

They then used gel electrophoresis to visualize and analyze the DNA markers. At one end of the gel, an electric current is applied to pull DNA fragments through the gel. It is a technique the FBI uses to help identify people through genetic traits, Bessert said.

Maura Bright and Mila Mitchell took a time-lapse video on Mitchell’s phone to capture the process and rewatch the dark bands slowly lengthen within the gel.

In another activity, Bessert and the students collected deer tick specimens from animals at the Dunn County Humane Society to see if the samples contained the borrelia bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

Bright, a Chippewa Falls junior, wants to be a geneticist. She discovered the concept of genealogy when she was 12, when she compared her and her sister's traits with their parents’ and noticed the difference in the color of their eyes.

Mitchell, a first year at Stanley-Boyd High School, became interested in forensic science watching TV with her mom and after completing a school project on genealogy.

Alyxandria Lunemann, a Bloomer High School senior, has always loved science. She was looking into future careers in chemistry “but it didn’t fit the description of what I had in mind,” she said.

Then when Lunemann talked with a professor who explained their research on the makeup of fruit flies and yeast and possible mutations in genes, she thought, “This is what I want to do. Mutational genetics is the study of the human genome and mutations within it, such as gigantism, dwarfism, albinism or sickle cell anemia,” she said.

“I feel that Stout’s STEAM camp is a good representation of what it will be like researching in a genetics lab. I’m glad to be here.”

Fashion inspiration through exploration

During an exploratory draping time, Smith encouraged her students to play with fabric to see how it laid over the dress forms, how it can be shaped, and to experiment creating pleats and ruffles. Her only parameter for them was that their dress must be sleeveless or strapless.

While drawing their designs, Smith asked students to pay attention to and accentuate body shapes. They looked for inspiration in images in her slideshow presentations and on their phones, referring to current and classic fashion trends, movies, books, nature and even architecture.

“Be intentional with each aspect of your design, just as each aspect of architecture in a building or branch of a tree has its function,” she said.

Three of the students – Annella Wolbert, Samantha Anderson and Addison Bauste – will be first-year students this fall at Menomonie High School. They joined the fashion camp because they are inspired by the creative of clothing. This was their first time draping and drawing fashions.

While draping the 3D forms, Wolbert’s inspiration was to go with the flow and see where the fabric led her. Anderson’s design was inspired by Taylor Swift’s Grammy outfit – a corset gown with a high leg slit and train.

Bauste’s sketches, including a blue and pink gown with a heavy shoulder ruffle, were inspired by “The Summer I Turned Pretty” book series and a mix and match of outfits she saw online.

Wolbert and Anderson have sewed before, creating pillowcase dresses with their Girl Scouts troop for Little Dresses for Africa. They are working toward earning their Silver Award with their troop and have made 50 dresses in the last two years.

��Ͽ�’s STEAM camps, which attract students from around Wisconsin, are sponsored by the Menomonie and Chippewa Falls school districts, Parker, OEM Fabricators and Delta Fastener in partnership with Continuing Education and Conferences, a unit of Ed ucational Pathways and Outreach.

��Ͽ� Athletics is offering multiple summer youth sports camps led by university coaches, staff and student athletes. Camps include basketball, football, gymnastics, soccer, softball, track, volleyball and dance.

Stout Adventures’ Youth Climbing League offers introductory activities, designed to empower kids ages 6 to 12. Experienced instructors lead activities for all skill levels. Two sessions will be held from Tuesday, June 11, to Wednesday, July 17; and Tuesday, July 23, to Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Creative Problem-Solving (DES-196, 1 Credit)

This 1-week course allows students to develop their analytical and synthetic thinking skills by practicing established creative problem-solving methods. These methods are derived contemporary and historic creative practices, principally from art, design, and theatre. The methods involve both divergent and convergent thinking activities (e.g., brainstorming, concept mapping, etc.). Students will also explore diverse philosophies about creativity and its roles in different industries and disciplines. The five days will be organized into morning and afternoon sessions. During the sessions, students will engage in individual, small group, and large group creative problem-solving activities. These activities prepare students for a final creative problem-solving challenge. Students’ days will be spent writing, drawing, and juggling,* and may also include a variety of other things.😉

Hands-on creative, athletics experiences geared for middle, high school students

This summer, middle and high school students can discover exciting career paths in science, technology, engineering, and art and design, while nurturing creativity and critical thinking skills or improve their athletic skills at a variety of youth camps led by ��Ͽ� faculty and coaches.

Children can ignite their curiosity, creativity and passion for learning in a supportive and engaging environment with opportunities at the popular Summer STEAM and Junior STEAM camps, as well as two new camps in Video Game Development and Theatre, and several sports and recreation camps.

Junior STEAM Experience

Junior STEAM Experience, for students entering grades six to eight, offers two sessions:

Exploration Camp, Sunday, June 16, to Thursday, June 20: Campers will embark on an all-in-one experience through various STEAM disciplines, including 3D Printing, unravel the mysteries of Genetics/DNA Analysis, delve into the world of Unhackable Quantum Codes, and unleash their creativity in Video Production and Video Game Design. They’ll also gain team building skills conquering the outdoor Challenge Course.
A series of specialized camps, Sunday, July 7, to Thursday, July 11: Campers can dive deeper into the subjects that interest them most, including Chain Making, Fashion Design Drawing, Storytelling and Video Production.

Summer STEAM Experience

Summer STEAM Experience offers a diverse array of weeklong sessions in June for students entering grades nine to twelve, designed to engage and provide hands-on learning experiences. Activities and a college student panel will provide experiences that highlight the value of creative and critical thinking.

High School STEAM Summer Camps

Inspiring and engaging STEAM camps for students entering grades 9-12

Students can choose from 10 unique tracks in a variety of STEAM disciplines.

Sunday, June 9, to Thursday, June 13:

Graphic Design and Printmaking: Students will explore graphic styles, typography design and how to print designs using ink and hand presses. They will create their own plant/letter poster and participate in a print exchange with campmates.
Metal Work: Explore the unique medium of enameling. Students will create a variety of 2D and 3D works as they learn techniques for using powdered and liquid enamel, including stenciling, drawing, painting, photo decal and raku pottery.
Roleplaying, Worldbuilding and Storytelling: Storytelling and imaginative play go hand-in-hand. Students will create characters, sketch stories and build worlds. Participants will create a variety of written works for their creative portfolios.
Video Production: Learn to make a movie, from scriptwriting to production to editing to the big screen. Students will use industry-standard software and prepare a final film for screening in ��Ͽ�’s historic Harvey Hall Theatre.

Sunday, June 23, to Thursday, June 27:

Acting: Explore new performance avenues by learning to develop characters and theatre techniques, comedy improvisational skills and stage combat techniques.
Fashion Drawing and Draping: Students will bring their fashion designs to life by learning to sketch professional fashion figures and then translate their sketches to fabric on a 3D form. Students will showcase their designs at the end of the week.
Microbiology: Genetics and DNA Analysis: Discover the world of molecular biology and how scientists solve problems with DNA – from population studies to forensic identification to medical screening.
Video Game Design: Students can level up their skills and learn the end-to-end process of creating video games using professional techniques and tools. Students will play-test their games with the class, family and friends at the end of the week.

Friday, June 21, One-Day Theater Experience: Experience a play in a day from brainstorming ideas to creating a production.

Sunday, July 14, to Thursday, July 18, Video Game Development: Students will bring their game ideas to life and dive into coding, creative writing, game design and concept art.

Cost is $495 for overnight campers, who’ll stay in the residence halls; and $345 for day campers. Menomonie and Chippewa Falls students’ cost is covered by their district, and scholarships are available for others as well. Contact Continuing Education for more information.

Top Talent Initiative award recognizes special skill-building, discovery camps and events

With a 99% employment rate for bachelor’s and master’s degree graduates, ��Ͽ� is known for developing talent in multiple fields to support the economy of west-central Wisconsin and throughout the state.

The university also invests heavily in the talent pipeline before students get to college, with numerous special programs to help youth begin considering in-demand career fields via higher education. Those efforts for “potential future impact” have earned ��Ͽ� a Top Talent Initiative award from Momentum West, which promotes economic development in the region.

The award was one of nine presented March 21 during Momentum West’s annual meeting held at ��Ͽ�’s Memorial Student Center. The recipients were “individuals and organizations that have made a significant impact over the past year,” said Executive Director Steve Jahn.

“The ��Ͽ� programs for middle and high school students build awareness of career paths for students in our region and beyond, create unique hands-on learning opportunities, enhance knowledge and communication with business and industry, promote our region and inevitably play a role in addressing the region’s workforce needs,” Jahn said.

��Ͽ� has the highest employment rate, 99%, and average starting salary for graduates, $58,000, among higher education institutions in west central Wisconsin, according to a newFirst Destination Report report.

The university programs for youth that promote career discovery, skill development and higher education opportunities include:

Summer STEAM camps for high school and middle school students, which include workshops in science, technology, engineering, art and design, and mathematics.
STEM Fest for students in Upward Bound programs at high schools in northwestern Wisconsin.
DECA District 1 skills competition, held each January, for high school marketing and business students.
SkillsUSA, held each February, to promote technical and leadership skills.
Teach Day, held each spring and fall, for high school students interested in the teaching field.
Fostering Success, which provides an on-campus experience and tours for 13- to 17-year-olds in foster care who are interested in higher education, while supporting college students who were in foster care.

��Ͽ� also offers career-specific tours and Cadaver Lab experiences for high school students.

The various programs draw about 2,000 middle and high school students to campus each year.

Many of the youth programs, including sports and recreation camps, are coordinated through Educational Pathways and Outreach, and Continuing Education and Conferences at ��Ͽ�.

“These programs and ��Ͽ�'s relationships with regional business and industry as a polytechnic university made it a great fit for the award,” Jahn said.

In 2023, Momentum West recognized ��Ͽ�’s Manufacturing Outreach Center with a Regional Impact award. The MOC is one of two centers in Wisconsin affiliated with the National Institute of Standards and Technology/Manufacturing Extension Partnership — NIST/ MEP — national network. The centers deliver comprehensive, proven solutions to small and medium manufacturers through consulting, training and workforce development.

Faculty, coaches to guide hands-on experiences in numerous career paths, improving skills

This summer, middle and high school students can discover exciting career paths in science, technology, engineering, art and design, and improve their athletic skills at a variety of camps led by ��Ͽ� faculty and coaches.

The opportunities include Summer STEAM, Junior STEAM and a new STEM-X camp and several sports and recreation camps.

STEM Experience (STEM-X)

STEM-X helps underrepresented and underserved high school students prepare for and succeed in their college careers. It is a free overnight camp, running Sunday, June 25, to Wednesday, June 28, providing hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Campers attend workshops to help develop their study and leadership skills and learn about campus resources, such as academic Advisement, Career Services and Financial Aid.

STEM-X sponsors and partners are 3M, and ��Ͽ�’s Multicultural Student Services, Educational Pathways and Continuing Education and Conferences.

Junior STEAM Experience

Junior STEAM Experience, for students entering grades six to eight, will run Sunday, June 18, to Thursday, June 22. Hands-on activities will be led by faculty, teaching assistants and camp counselors.

They’ll rotate through nine sessions: 3D printing; engineering and technology; industrial design; interior design; chain making; genetics and DNA analysis; photo and video; unhackable quantum codes; and video production.

Middle School STEAM Summer Camps

Summer STEAM Experience will offer 11 unique tracks available over two weeks. / ��Ͽ�

Summer STEAM Experience

Summer STEAM Experience is doubling its offerings this year for high school students, with 11 unique tracks available over two weeks: Sunday, June 11, to Thursday, June 15; and Sunday, July 9, to Thursday, July 13.

Campers may register for one or both weeks. Camp activities and a college student panel will provide experiences that highlight the value of creative and critical thinking. About 120 students are anticipated for both weeks.

Registration for the STEAM experiences will open Saturday, March 11. Cost is $475 for overnight campers, who’ll stay in the residence halls; and $325 for day campers.

High School STEAM Summer Camps

Inspiring and engaging STEAM camps for students entering grades 9-12

Week One (Sunday, June 11—Thursday, June 15)

Video Production, with Lecturer Jonny Wheeler: Campers will learn how to tell a story from script writing to planning shots to capturing professional-quality video. At the end of the week, students will screen their short films on the big screen in the university’s Harvey Hall Theatre.
3D Animation, with Senior Lecturer Jesse Woodward: Campers will use the same software used by Disney Animation Studios, working together to produce an animated short film that will be featured online.
Web Design, with Assistant Professor Kris Isaacson: Campers will learn about design and layout best practices for websites, brainstorming ideas for their own interactive website project, while learning HTML and CSS — the building blocks of web development.
Video Game Design, with Lecturer Karl Koehle: Campers will learn the end-to-end process of creating video games and the many skills needed to bring a game to life, from sketching levels and characters to animation, programming logic and sound effects. At the end of the week, they will play-test a game of their own creation.
Explore 3D Printing and More, with professors Wei Zheng and Alex Jordan: Campers will learn to design and manufacture plastic and wood products and explore the high-demand plastics engineering profession.
Digital Storytelling, with Associate Professor Mitch Ogden: Digital storytelling blends creative writing, story exploration and media production. Campers will generate story ideas and construct digital stories, like web-based interactive stories (choose-your-own-adventure), gamification of stories, podcasts or audiobooks and multimedia stories.

"Web design is for people who are creative, like puzzles, problem-solving and technology. It combines designing layouts, playing with colors and the logic of coding," Isaacson said. "If you’re interested in computer programming, this is a friendly way to get started. Each student will leave camp with a working multi-page website that they design and build from scratch. Students will learn how to become creators of content on the web instead of just consuming what others have done."

Week Two (Sunday, July 9—Thursday, July 13)

Industrial Design/Product Design, with Professor Jennifer Astwood: Campers will explore the process of developing and designing a light, from sketching, to learning Adobe Illustrator, to prototyping using a laser cutter.
Enameling on Metal: Grit, Gloss and Finish, with Lecturer Rose Schlemmer: Campers will learn the basics of how to enamel on metal using techniques such as sgraffito, stencils, image decals, and champlevé and will create an artwork of their own.
Furniture Design, with Lecturer Cassie Savela: Campers will learn the design process and 3D modeling software to create a set of 2D and 3D technical drawings of their very own custom table, chair or bench. Drawings will be collected into a personalized 10- to 15-page process book to present at the Camper Showcase.
Interior Design, with Assistant Professor Nicolette Brehm: Campers will design a living space for their favorite celebrity, learning the design process, concept development, how to draft a floor plan to scale, create a color palette, and make finish and furniture selections for a final presentation.
Genetics/DNA Analysis, with Professor Michael Bessert: Campers will explore the world of molecular biology by collecting specimens from the field, extracting and quantifying DNA and use techniques to copy and analyze DNA to answer questions and solve problems.

Brehm thinks that students who are “highly creative and also technically inclined would excel in the Interior Design course. Interior design is a field where these worlds overlap,” she said. “Students that are interested in how people can be affected by their interior environment would also enjoy the course.”

The STEAM programs are sponsored by the Eau Claire and Menomonie school districts, Xcel Energy and Parker in partnership with Continuing Education and Conferences.

Sports and Activities

Registration will open soon for ��Ͽ� Athletics sports camps and Stout Adventures’ Youth Climbing League.

Athletics offers multiple summer sports camps led by university coaches and staff, including baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball and more.

Youth Climbing League offers introductory climbing activities, designed to empower kids ages 6 to 13. Experienced instructors lead activities, and it is open to all skill levels and experience.

Opportunities in STEAM, athletics, music and adventuring abound

Erika Saindon is an artist. The upcoming senior at Albert Lea High School, in Albert Lea, Minn., loves working on anything from digital to traditional art. Last spring, when she was deciding on what to study in college, she considered her interests in graphic design, animation and art education.

Saindon’s mom, Therese, works with graphic designers who graduated from ��Ͽ�, which offers such programs in its School of Art and Design and School of Education.

“My parents knew that Stout was somewhat of a very artsy technical school, so they looked into a summer program for me and came across STEAM,” Saindon said.

The Summer STEAM Experience, which was held in June, invited high school students to discover career paths in science, technology, engineering, art and math with guided activities led by ��Ͽ� faculty. This summer’s camp was back to being in person.

It’s been a busy summer on campus, with approximately 800 elementary, middle and high school students attending 10 different overnight camps and clinics. Athletics hosted an additional 900 campers, and a WiFab training series brought in 15 teachers and instructors from across the state.

The Summer STEAM Experience welcomed 76 campers and 90 campers joined Junior STEAM for a variety of learning tracks.

It was at STEAM where Saindon met Vanessa Stephens, an upcoming senior at Ellsworth High School from Hager City. Stephens is interested in computer science.

This was their first time attending the camp. Saindon and Stephens enjoyed meeting new people from new places, connecting with camp counselors and learning the animation process. They quickly became friends and are looking into attending ��Ͽ� in fall 2023.

“We both had made friends in our track but they were day campers,” Stephens said. “At the first meal, Erika and I sat by each other and just started talking. We did arts and crafts together every day and had lots of time to talk. We learned we have a lot in common and are very similar people.”

Saindon and Stephens joined about 24 other campers in the 3D Animation track led by Senior Lecturer Jesse Woodward. Campers created animations using the same industry-standard software used by Disney Animation Studios.

They learned the basics of 3D animation, including the 12 principles of animation, and how to create movement in different kinds of characters, like a bouncing ball and a pendulum. They then animated a simplified squirrel using the previous exercises to help them. Woodward gives similar assignments to his university students, he said.

“Throughout, I wanted my students to understand that animating does not mean to just move something on a screen. It’s about giving life and character to what you animate. When working in their teams, they also had the opportunity to see how an animation pipeline works and learn how to work together in a technical but creative environment,” Woodward said.

Campers also decorated T-shirts, and Saindon showed her drawing skills, covering their shirts in quotes, her beliefs and new friends’ portraits.

“Sometimes I'm not really even thinking while I'm drawing. I just move my pen and hope it turns out. My entire process is just to make a mark and see what happens,” Saindon said.

STEAM is coordinated through the university’s Professional Education Programs and Services. Other STEAM tracks were 3D Printing, Comics: Creative Nonfiction, Enameling on Metal, Interior Design and Metalsmithing and Jewelry.

The program is sponsored by the Eau Claire and Menomonie school districts, Xcel Energy and Parker.

Fostering Success Camp for youth

The Fostering Success Camp is for youth ages 13 to 17, who are in out-of-home care. The camp offers an opportunity for attendees to experience college on the ��Ͽ� campus with other foster youth from across the state.

“The camp is an important part of creating an educational pipeline for foster youth interested in pursuing higher education,” said Angie Ruppe, director of Student Support Services and Fostering Success, which partners with high schools across Wisconsin.

“Over the years, we have provided this experience for nearly 100 youth across Wisconsin.”

The camp took place June 17-18, for 10 registered campers. Attendees identified their personal strengths, learned about financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and attended presentations on opportunities that exist post-high school, including technical education, four-year degrees, military and job corps.

They also met with Peer Mentors, ��Ͽ� students and former foster youth, who led small group discussions and joined in activities like the outdoor ropes course for team-building skills.

Blue Devil Athletics and Stout Adventures camps

Blue Devil Athletics camps and clinics this summer were held on campus by the Blue Devil men’s and women's basketball, football and gymnastics programs. Coaches and student athletes, ranging from elementary students to elite high school athletes.

At outlying camps across the country, Blue Devil coaches and student athletes served more than 5,700 summer campers.

Stout Adventures held three camps at their indoor and outdoor facilities led by experienced instructors. Ropes Course Exploration camp is a four-day camp for ages 10 to 14, where kids work on communication, teamwork, problem solving and confidence building.

Story Time and Climb families / Stout Adventures

Youth Climbing League is an introductory program for ages 6 to 13, open to all skill levels and experience. YCL is designed to empower kids and introduce them to the sport of climbing.

And for Story Time and Climb, Stout Adventures partners with the University Library, inviting kids ages 2 to 5 for a story, activities in the climbing wall space, working on fine motor skills and interacting with others.

From July 25-28, ��Ͽ� hosted the Apple Valley (Minn.) Eastview High School marching band. While the camp was self-instructed, the university provided housing, meals and practice space for the nearly 200-member band at Don and Nona Williams Stadium.

��Ͽ�’s Summer STEAM Experience is offering in-person, guided activities in science, technology, engineering, art and math for middle and high school students in June.

The Summer STEAM Experience runs from Sunday, June 12, to Thursday, June 16. Students entering grades 9 to 12 are invited to explore career paths with ��Ͽ� faculty in a campus setting, with experiences that highlight the value of creative and critical thinking.

The Junior STEAM Experience, for students entering grades 6 to 8, runs from Sunday, June 19, to Thursday, June 23. Students will explore STEAM courses through hands-on activities and games.

Registration for both experiences is open.

Rebecca Thacker, program manager for Professional Education Programs and Services at ��Ͽ�, which is organizing the STEAM events, said, “We are so excited to be back in person this summer and look forward to sharing the many opportunities of ��Ͽ� with campers.”

The STEAM experience for older students offers six tracks, while the Junior experience offers five tracks, with the guidance of ��Ͽ� faculty, teaching assistants and camp counselors.

Lecturer Jonny Wheeler, in the School of Art and Design, will be leading the Video Production track, in which students will learn how to tell a story from script writing to planning shots to capturing professional-quality video. At the end of the week, students will screen their short films on the big screen in the university’s Harvey Hall Theatre.

“Students have a story to tell. Film is all about stories,” Wheeler said. “This summer, I will be working with students to help find new ways for them to creatively tell their own stories by constructing a visual narrative through video.

“Project-based learning is the backbone of the class and gives students an authentic experience by disseminating work outside of the classroom. For movies, that means a screening in a theater. We’re lucky here at Stout to have the beautifully historic Harvey Hall Theatre, where students can watch the films they’ve created; it’s inspiring just to be in that space.”

Other tracks include:

Interior Design, with professors Julie Peterson and Nicolette Brehm: Campers will design a living space for their favorite celebrity, learning the design process, space planning, how to create a color palette and project presentations.
3D Animation, with Senior Lecturer Jesse Woodward: Campers will create 3D animations using the same software used by Disney Animation Studios, working together to produce an animated short film that will be featured online.
Comics: Creative Nonfiction, with Lecturer and comic artist Mary Clime and Professor and nonfiction writer Kate Roberts Edenborg: Campers will learn the ins and outs of writing, drawing and producing an eight-page comic with creative nonfiction plot lines.
Enameling on Metal: Grit, Gloss and Finish, with Lecturer Rose Schlemmer: Campers will learn the basics of how to enamel on metal using different techniques such as sgraffito, stencils, image decals and champlevé.
The Art of Chain Making: Metalsmithing and Jewelry, with Lecturer Rose Schlemmer. Campers will learn the basics of creating wire forms using hand tools and soldering to make different chain samples, then design and create a jewelry piece.
Explore 3D Printing and More, with professors Wei Zheng, Adam Kramschuster and Alex Jordan: Campers will learn to design and manufacture plastic and wood products and explore the high-demand plastics engineering profession.
