What to expect, FAQs and packing advice

��Ͽ� has a weeklong move-in process, when your student may drop off items before returning to campus for orientation.

This fall’s move-in week is from August 22 to August 30, 2026, allowing for flexibility around you and your student’s busy summer schedule.

The weeklong process helps to reduce community congestion so that your day may be low stress and laid back. Although you won't have university staff assistance during move-in, our process allows you and your student to have time for room set up and to get any last-minute items and explore their building, campus and Menomonie.

��Ͽ� Polytechnic Packing List

Know what to bring for move-in day

Your student can settle into their space ahead of time and be focused to start the year!

In early August, your student will be able to select a day and time during move-in week to set up their room. Directions on scheduling a move-in time will be emailed to their ��Ͽ� email address in late July.
Your student may stay during the week. However, most students will leave campus and return for fall orientation. Students should be sure to return to campus between 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, for the orientation experience. Meal plans are not active during move-in week, however, some food service will be available.

Meet at Parking Lot 29 on the date and time selected. Your student will have one unloading space in front of their building during their two-hour move-in time. Once unloaded or by the end of your move-in time, you will move your vehicle to an approved parking lot.

If your student will be moving to campus in the spring semester, remind them to check their ��Ͽ� email in December for more information.

Fritz receives Outstanding Mid-Level Professional Award

For her dedication to enhancing the residential experience for on-campus students at ��Ͽ�, Assistant Director of Housing Dana Fritz received a regional award from her professional association.

She received the Outstanding Mid-Level Professional Award at the annual conference for the Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers, held recently in Springfield, Mo.

Fritz has been at ��Ͽ� for more than 15 years. She was nominated by Director of Housing Adam Ludwig, who has worked with her since 2010.

“Dana is the backbone of our administration operations,” Ludwig said.

Fritz coordinates the Housing assignment process for students, including all communications that families and prospective and yielded students receive, from room selection to the move-in process and accommodations along the way, as well as ensuring students have a housing assignment and the accuracy of the billing process.

In 2015, when Housing experienced an organizational overhaul, Fritz moved from being a hall director to operations coordinator with the central leadership team. She restructured multiple processes, transitioning from a model that relied on 11 hall directors to one managed by five residence life coordinators.

“Her creativity, student-focused approach, and operational acumen were critical in ensuring a smooth transition,” Ludwig said.

Now, as assistant director for Administrative Operations, Fritz challenges the Housing team to prioritize equity, whether in addressing student accommodation needs, guiding programmatic initiatives, overseeing building renovation projects or shaping departmental language.

She spearheaded the centralization of Housing’s desk operations and the creation of a new student operations manager position, supervised by the central office. This initiative allowed live-in staff to focus on students’ mental health needs without the distraction of administrative tasks.

“Dana empowers students by finding creative ways to give them meaningful roles and leverage their strengths for the benefit of the department,” Ludwig said.

The student team was named Student Staff Team of the Year at ��Ͽ�’s 2024 Leadership Awards.

In response to the pandemic in spring 2020, when the nation’s universities and colleges moved to alternative learning methods, Fritz quickly devised an efficient move-out process for the majority of campus residents while coordinating temporary housing for students who had no alternative accommodations.

Working closely with Facilities, she developed a comprehensive summer cleaning plan to prepare campus housing for fall occupancy and played a key role in transforming the move-in process to meet the requirements aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19.

“Her innovative week-long move-in strategy remains in place today due to its high satisfaction ratings and reduced strain on staff resources,” Ludwig said.

The Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers covers eight states and Manitoba, Canada.

Sandi Scott receives Association of College and University Housing Officers-International’s highest honor

For her lifetime of outstanding student service, professional leadership and contributions to the field of campus housing across many universities and organizations, ��Ͽ� Dean of Students Sandi Scott has received the prestigious international Parthenon Society award.

Bestowed by the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International, the Parthenon is the association’s highest honor.

Scott, who is ��Ͽ�’s Title IX coordinator and a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet, was nominated for the Parthenon by Chancellor Katherine Frank, Associate Dean of Students Jacqueline Bonneville and Director of University Housing Adam Ludwig. Her nomination was championed by UW-Whitewater’s Executive Director of University Housing Terry Tumbarello.

“Sandi is known throughout the state, region and nation for her commitment to student development and the profession of student affairs. While she has been honored with awards at the state, regional and national level, no honor eclipses the fact that Sandi is recognized as a mentor and friend to many people in the field,” Frank said.

Scott has worked in the field for 38 years, with 31 years supporting students and leading professional teams as a residence hall director, director of Residence Life, assistant director of Housing and director of Housing at three University of Wisconsin campuses, beginning at UW-Whitewater before joining UW-River Falls.

“I’m humbled to have been recognized by ACUHO-I with this award. It has been a privilege and honor to be able to support students and staff as they pursue personal and professional success,” said Scott, who has been with ��Ͽ� since 2014.

Scott and other 2024 honorees were recognized at ACUHO-I’s Campus Home. LIVE! annual conference and expo in June, in Milwaukee.

ACUHO-I aims to enhance on-campus student living environments and serves more than 17,000 campus housing professionals, representing 1.2 million students around the globe. The Parthenon Award has recognized members since 2004.

A career impacting thousands across the globe

Led by Scott, Bonneville and members of the Title IX team work together to ensure equal access to education for all students.

“Sandi has been a champion on this topic and served as an expert. She is an advocate for diversity and inclusion, working with professionals and student housing staff to create an overall sense of belonging, with interactive experiences and development opportunities to learn from others and better serve our students,” said Bonneville, who worked with Scott at UW-Whitewater from 1996 to 2000, before being hired by Scott again in 2017 at ��Ͽ�.

Scott has held numerous positions in ACUHO-I, including serving on the executive board and regional cabinet and Credentialing Task Force chair. She has also served as the Wisconsin College Personnel Association president.

“Sandi serves as an inspiration to others in our field. Her expertise to drive meaningful change has led to the development and implementation of initiatives that have positively impacted thousands of professionals and students through the years, in every state and internationally,” said Tumbarello, who worked with Scott for 10 years at UW-Whitewater.

As a member of the Bridge to Hope Board of Directors, serving Dunn and Pepin counties, Scott works with the campus advocate to provide direct support to students. The Bridge to Hope provides shelter, support, information and referrals to those affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

She has been an adjunct instructor at Concordia University for more than 20 years, advising and teaching hundreds of graduate students in the Student Personnel Administration program.

A drive to do better for students, even in the darkest times

Frank began her tenure as chancellor in March 2020, just one week before universities across the nation began an alternative learning period because of COVID-19.

In response to the pandemic, Scott served with Frank as part of the leadership team and led the Student Life and Services unit, which needed to adjust operations quickly while prioritizing health and safety, as well as putting the needs of students first.

“It did not take long after my arrival to recognize Sandi's work ethic and commitment,” Frank said. “When you have an important decision to make regarding Student Affairs, you want Sandi at the table. She is skilled at making difficult decisions and taking into consideration students, staff, the institution and best practices in each instance.

“She was able to lead during this time because of her reputation on campus and within the Universities of Wisconsin, and because of the commitment of those who work for her who model collaboration and engage in productive work.”

Ludwig became director of Housing in fall 2020. He worked closely with Scott as she orchestrated ��Ͽ�’s pandemic response.

“Throughout this entire process, Sandi maintained a keen awareness of student needs and advocated for students who experienced inequities. She led with empathy, and she always fought for her staff to find balance – often at the sacrifice of her own well-being,” Ludwig said.

“Sandi is the consummate professional. She has an innate desire to learn more and do better. Even in the darkest times, she maintains her level of positivity and drive to do this work and ultimately leave the Student Affairs profession better than when she arrived in it, so many decades ago,” he added.

Keeping Everyone Informed

The Dean of Students is one of the main points of contact for emergency incidents. Please follow the instructions below for connecting with your student or keeping the university informed of external situations that could impact your student's attendance.

Contacting a Student During a Family Crisis

Sometimes a family member might have difficulty contacting a student in a time of crisis, such as a medical emergency or a death in the family. All emergency inquiries during business hours should be directed to Dean of Students Office via phone at 715-232-1181 or via email. After hours, contact the University Police Department at 715-232-2222.

Student Crises & Absences

In the event of a short-term illness (less than 3 days) it is best for the student to contact their instructor directly. If the student is hospitalized or experiencing a difficulty that will keep them out of school for 3 days or more, please contact the Dean of Students Office via phone 715-232-1181 or via email. If a parent or family member is concerned about their student’s health or wellness, please contact the Dean of Students Office.

A notification of student absences will be issued by the Dean of Students Office. Documentation is required. This notification does not change attendance policies put in effect by the instructor and is a courtesy memo only, letting the instructor know the whereabouts of the student. Using this process to determine excused absences and/or work assignments is determined by the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to initiate contact with their instructor regarding any missed work or exams.

Campus Emergency Information

The university posts any large-scale campus emergency on our ��Ͽ� Alert Messaging System and website. Students will be notified by text message when there is an immediate threat to the health or safety of students.

Our Emergency Response Guide provides campus the tools to stay safe during emergencies.

Confidential Campus Health & Mental Health Resources

The Student Health Centre is conveniently located on North Campus and offers appointments for preventive and primary care needs as well as laboratory services, tuberculosis testing, and vaccines. Students can be seen for anxiety and depression and a consulting psychiatric provider is available 2 half days per month. Most services are included in the students segregated fees.

Counseling Center is staffed by licensed and trained counselors. It is located in Bowman Hall. Services offered include individual, couple, and group counseling. Alcohol education classes are offered also. There is no charge to students for this service.

You.uwstout.edu is a self-help and well being platform. YOU helps student navigate life and campus on their terms with independent goal setting, skill building, assessments and evidence based content on well-being topics. Through this web based application students can connect with a 24/7 crisis service available via call, text, or chat and can connect to Mantra teletherapy services which are available during the day, evenings, and on weekends.

��Ͽ� Hazing Policy

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The University of Wisconsin-Stout is committed to promoting a safe and healthy campus environment, where individuals are free from hazing. The purpose of this policy is to define hazing at ��Ͽ� and establish requirements for hazing education, reporting, and response in accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act.

2.0 SCOPE OF POLICY

This Policy applies to all employees, registered student organizations (RSOs), students, student groups, and individuals who volunteer with RSOs and student groups.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

3.1 REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATION (RSO):

A group, composed mainly of, and directed by, students, consisting of at least four students and an advisor, and which has filed all appropriate registration forms with the Involvement Center in the Memorial Student Center and been confirmed by the Involvement Center as meeting the eligibility criteria for registration, and is active and in good standing.

3.2 STUDENT GROUP:

A group of at least two students that is established or recognized by the university, but the group does not meet the definition of a registered student organization. Examples include, but are not limited to, athletic teams and club sports (e.g., varsity sports, intramural sports), military organizations, honor societies, musical or theatrical ensembles, university bands and club sports

4.0 STATEMENT OF POLICY

In compliance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act and Wis. Stat. § 948.51, ��Ͽ� defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act against an individual that endangers the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health of that individual for the purposes of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in any organization or group and that causes or creates a risk of physical or psychological injury, regardless of the individual’s willingness to participate.

5.0 CRITERIA

5.1 HAZING CAN INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

5.1.1 Brutality of a physical nature or the threat of bodily harm such as assault, whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to elements, sleep deprivation, confinement, or any other activity which could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.2 Forced consumption of any alcohol, food, liquid, drug, or other substance that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.3 Soliciting a person to participate in or be actively involved in the planning of any act meeting the definition of hazing.

5.1.4 Any activity that constitutes the violation of university policies and/or federal, state, or local law (including ordinances of the City of Menomonie), or that causes another person to commit such a violation.

5.1.5 Acts that degrade, humiliate, embarrass, ridicule, or isolate such as requiring servitude, taking away cell phones or other devices, not allowing class attendance, requiring costumes or other apparel unless that apparel is part of a uniform for employment or a university or athletic program, confinement, or any other activity that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.6 Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts.

5.2 REPORTING

5.2.1 Campus security authorities as defined in Institutional Clery Act Compliance are required to report incidents of hazing to the university.

5.2.2 Allegations of hazing may be reported via the University of Wisconsin-Stout Incident Reporting Form

5.3 INVESTIGATION/REFERRAL

5.3.1 The Dean of Students Office is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of hazing.

5.3.2 Individual students will follow student nonacademic disciplinary procedures outlined in Wis. Admin. Code UWS § 17

5.3.3 Registered Student Organizations will follow the disciplinary procedures outlined in Registered Student Organization Code of Conduct

5.3.4 Hazing allegations involving individuals who are not students will be referred to the appropriate office.

5.4 HAZING PREVENTION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMMING

5.4.1 Research-informed hazing prevention and awareness training will be made available to students, staff, and faculty. This training will include information about this policy and other applicable university policies, how to recognize and report hazing, and strategies for intervening when hazing is witnessed or known.

Two alum offer helpful housing and roommate tips

Choosing to move off-campus is sometimes easier said than done. Your soon-to-be-junior might have questions like, Where do I live? Who do I live with? What about roommate conflict? How will I create boundaries?

There are 101 questions running through students’ minds as they make the jump from on-campus living to off-campus.

We asked two ��Ͽ� alums about their thoughts.

“Finding housing in Menomonie is easy and it’s not too expensive. Landlords can be difficult to work with, so make sure you trust your landlord before moving in. I think that it is better to live with people who you know but are not your best friends because it prevents conflict," said Olivia Satterlee, a human development and family services graduate.

As easy as renting a safe and comfortable space might be, dynamics within your student’s home are just as important. Erica Holbrook, a graphic design and interactive media graduate, shared her thoughts on setting roommate expectations. “Before moving in together, I would recommend having a meeting where everyone discusses a chore list and other general housekeeping rules. This ensures everyone is on the same page about how things will be run around the house. We all have been raised differently by our families, so our standards of living and general experiences are going to vary,” she said.

“Another idea to consider is establishing ‘quiet hours,’ just like in the dorms. If you like to stay up late studying or have a hard time sleeping when there’s sound, this makes sure you are getting the respect you deserve,” Holbrook added. “Everyone should feel comfortable and welcome in their own home, so having a conversation with your roommates about these things will hopefully help everyone get along and prevent conflicts from arising.”

While living off-campus allows for more freedom and independence, it can be hard to find a healthy mix of playtime and work time. Holbrook suggests making a daily routine. “If you’re planning on moving in with your friends, it can be really fun to always be hanging out with them because it’s like a never-ending sleepover. This can easily distract you from your homework though, so finding a healthy balance is going to be super important,” she said.

Holbrook suggests students eliminate distractions and find a favorite place outside their home to concentrate on schoolwork. Maybe it’s the Memorial Student Center. the library or a café downtown.

When your student makes the choice to live off-campus, setting boundaries and prioritizing time and space for academics can be the secrets to their success.

Foley, residence life coordinator, receives award from Wisconsin College Personnel Association

Ian Foley, a residence life coordinator at ��Ͽ� with a passion for helping students, has been recognized by the Wisconsin College Personnel Association for his impact in the student services field.

Foley, of Menomonie, recently received the Nora McGuire Outstanding Professional Award. The annual honor goes to a member and midlevel professional who has “demonstrated initiative, creativity and innovation in their work” along with other qualities and accomplishments, WCPA said.

“Ian’s passion and commitment to student growth, learning and development is beyond exemplary,” said Dean of Students Sandi Scott. “He is a tireless student advocate, committed to ensuring processes, policies and procedures that impact students are comprehensive and in the best interest of students. He intentionally seeks ways to improve the student experience.”

Foley, who has worked at ��Ͽ� for six years, focuses every day on supporting students.

“I spend a great deal of my time providing crisis response to students in distress, working with students when they need social or academic support and either helping out at my level or referring them up to those who need it,” Foley said.

“I enjoy helping improve someone else’s quality of life. If someone has a less than ideal quality of life or living situation, they might not be at their best self to participate fully in class. It’s nice to help folks and give them resources or advice to get them to a place where they feel they learn and enjoy their time in college,” he said.

Foley has developed two manuals for student staff in University Housing, was part of the implementation team for the EAB Navigate student retention program and is past chair of the campus Safety and Workers Compensation committee.

He has a master’s in higher education administration from Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., and a bachelor’s in political science and communication studies from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He is a native of East Stroudsburg, Pa.

“Ian sees the broader picture of campuswide mechanisms and opportunities to better serve our students. He has an analytical mindset balanced with an understanding of human dynamics that leads to positive relationships and positive results for our students,” said Darrin Witucki, director of University Centers and former WCPA board member.

Jacqueline Bonneville, associate dean of students, said Foley “demands we be better for our students. He continually thinks about ways we can do our work differently, reach more students and be more efficient in the work we do. He doesn’t shy away from difficult conversations and disagreements. Understanding that helps us get to the best solution. There is nothing Ian won’t volunteer to do. We could use more Ians in this world.”

Foley will begin a new role soon at ��Ͽ� as compliance specialist and youth and minors protection coordinator.

This is the second time in three years a ��Ͽ� employee has received the Nora McGuire Outstanding Professional honor. Adam Ludwig, director of University Housing, won in 2021.

WCPA formed nearly 50 years ago. Its mission is to provide “professional development for higher education professionals serving students in Wisconsin,” according to its website.

Move-In, Blue Rah, Week One Orientation, Backyard Bash lead up to start of classes Sept. 7

With five major events and activities planned, the focus is on students as the start of the fall semester approaches at ��Ͽ�.

Fall classes begin Wednesday, Sept. 7, but special events leading up to the start of the semester will help ensure that first-year, transfer and returning students are ready to go on opening day.

Move-In: Students living on campus began moving in their belongings on Aug. 27 and will continue through Sunday, Sept. 4. Students schedule a two-hour slot to unload their vehicle and can unpack in a relaxing atmosphere. The week-plus move-in period also provides flexibility with their schedule before classes begin.

Blue Rah: The annual celebration for first-year and transfer students begins at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Johnson Fieldhouse. Dancing, music, games, trivia and surprises will be part of the celebration.

Speakers will include Chancellor Katherine Frank and Dean of Students Sandi Scott, along with representatives from the Stout Student Association and Athletics.

Blue Rah, which began in 2007, is co-hosted by Orientation and New Student Programs and Blue Devil Productions.

Week One Orientation: First-year and transfer students can meet new people and get acclimated throughout the first week.

“The goal of Week One is to connect students to their peers and begin building community on campus through many ice breakers, group team builders and social activities,” said Britta Miller, coordinator of New Student Orientation.

Information sessions include Your Voice. Your Actions. Your Impact., by the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office; and Wellness 101 presented by Prevea Student Health Services and the Counseling Center.

Free activities will be offered during the week, including Blue Devil Productions’ first Thursday Night Out, Sept. 8. It will feature the bands the Over Unders at 8 p.m. and headliner Running Lights at 9 p.m. at the Terrace in the Memorial Student Center.

Backyard Bash: The annual party featuring student organization booths, music, food and inflatables is scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, on the lawn south of the student center.

��Ͽ� has approximately 150 student organizations, which are coordinated through the Involvement Center.

Meet Menomonie: Students can visit booths to learn about local businesses and services from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Multipurpose Room of the Sports and Fitness Center. Coupons, prizes and free samples will be available.

��Ͽ� partners with the Greater Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce to hold the event.

Also scheduled during opening week is the annual Stout Student Association ice cream social, featuring free ice cream, from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the student center amphitheater, east entrance. Students are invited to stop by and learn about student government.

For faculty and staff, presemester professional development opportunities began Aug. 22 and continue through Friday, Sept. 2, including universitywide Engagement Sessions scheduled Monday, Aug. 29.

Sgt. Pederson, recognized by women’s association, leads community policing efforts on campus

As a sergeant with the University of Wisconsin-Stout police, Lisa Pederson believes there are two equally important halves of her work as an officer.

One involves enforcement of the law. The other involves reinforcement. The second half of the equation — working directly with and getting to know students and staff to gain their respect — drew Pederson to ��Ͽ� and has inspired her campus work for 18 years.

Her efforts have been recognized this spring with a Merit Award from the Wisconsin Association of Women Police for superior accomplishments and project leadership that make a significant contribution to public safety.

For Pederson, of Boyceville, effective law enforcement begins with building relationships, a concept known as community policing. “I’m very much a people person. It’s a part of the job I gravitate to, being able to talk with students and help them through situations, be that presence when you can help them,” she said.

She has worked an afternoon-evening shift for most of her career at ��Ͽ�, forgoing time in her squad car to become a regular presence in the residence halls and stopping in the student center or dining facilities to chat with students, play a board game with them or even have dinner with them.

“You really get to know people,” Pederson said. “It’s those types of interactions that make students think, ‘Maybe they are OK.’ You might be their first contact with a law enforcement officer, and you need to make that as positive of an experience as you can, even if it doesn’t always work.”

Pederson’s example has become part of the culture with ��Ͽ� police, Chief Jason Spetz said. “Lisa taught me everything I know about working with a community. We’re doing it here and doing it well, based on what Lisa has taught us,” he said.

While they keep a professional distance, Pederson, Spetz and the five other full-time officers at University Police have been invited to students’ weddings, been thanked by parents and been in many a commencement photo with graduates as a result of the connections they’ve made and the impacts they’ve had on students.

“You can build relationships with students you’ve dealt with three or four times,” Pederson said, a process that may even include casual calls or visits to the student’s residence hall room just to make sure they’re doing OK.

Making a difference

One of her most memorable career moments came in 2012 when she and Spetz answered an emergency call about an unresponsive student. The found Ryan Child on the ground near South Hall, not breathing. As an EMT who teaches CPR, Pederson led the resuscitation process, including chest compressions after fire department EMTs arrived and shocked Child.

Child was revived, taken to the hospital and soon recovered. The first-year student from Lake Geneva unknowingly had a genetic abnormality called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or tissue thickening in the muscle of his heart.

He went on to earn a degree and today owns a restaurant in Wisconsin.

Pederson and Spetz have remained friends with Child and recently had their picture taken with him when they were working at a University of Wisconsin football game in Madison and saw Child.

Pederson’s career in public service began with Boyceville Fire and Ambulance. She was a firefighter and EMT when she saw an ad for Dunn County Sheriff’s Department reserve officers. She worked as a part time officer for almost 10 years at the department, including five part time at ��Ͽ�, while attending the police academy at Chippewa Valley Technical College. She also worked at Campus Ministry on campus.

When opportunities to work full time opened in 2004 with both departments, she chose ��Ͽ�. “I had always loved working at ��Ͽ�,” she said.

Pederson’s University Police activities have included:

Leading training for and investigations of crimes against women and sexual assault cases
Conducting personal safety training for students, faculty and staff
Teaching fitness courses to police academy students at CVTC
Working with the Campus Violence Prevention Project
Training in crisis intervention related to mental health issues
Working with students, many of them criminal justice and rehabilitation majors, as part of the department’s Community Service Officer program.
Volunteering for the Shop with a Cop community fall and winter fundraiser.

Spetz nominated Pederson for the award. “Lisa has touched so many lives within the law enforcement ranks and the community she serves,” he said.

“I’ve been privileged to work with Lisa since my first day on the job with our agency. I came in as an experienced officer, but Lisa taught me skills I never would have imagined before I started, how to effectively connect with a community. She is one of a kind in this area.”

South Hall project, with new entrance and upgrades throughout, will begin in spring 2022

After 55 years of housing students, South Hall is due for an upgrade, University of Wisconsin-Stout officials believe.

The Wisconsin State Building Commission has agreed, in late October approving $25 million for the project, part of $124 million approved for projects statewide.

Construction is scheduled to begin in late spring 2022 and wrap up in the summer of 2023.

South Hall, at the northeast corner of Broadway Street and 13th Avenue E., hasn’t been significantly improved since it opened in 1967. Since then, about 20,000 students have called it home.

The project will include a new main entrance, which will face the campus mall on the northeast side. The existing main entrance is on the south side.

Other changes that will help make the building compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and improve living conditions include:

Renovated bathrooms and showers with increased privacy
Updated student rooms with new furnishings
Expanded lounge, meeting and kitchen spaces
New heating, ventilation, electrical and communications systems
New windows, doors, elevator and roof.

The work will encompass 75,800 square feet, and 360 feet will be added for the new entrance. The building will have 358 beds when it reopens.

South Hall, one of nearly a dozen residence halls managed by University Housing, houses first-year students.

The upgrades are similar to but not as extensive as those made to North Hall, three blocks north, when it closed in 2018 and reopened in 2019. North Hall also was built in 1967 and is considered the twin to South Hall.

“We are excited about moving forward with the South Hall renovation project. The existing building is worn and tired,” said Justin Utpadel, ��Ͽ� director of Facilities Management.

“This project will provide our students with a fully renovated, updated student living facility that is accessible and inclusive. We have worked hard in the planning and design of this building project to create spaces that foster relationship building, integrate sustainability and provide for an improved experience that supports student success,” Utpadel said.

��Ͽ�’s FOCUS2030 strategic plan has five goals. One of them addresses, in part, student living environments that are equitable, diverse and inclusive.

New exterior features at South Hall will include silver panels accentuating the original brick, similar to those at North Hall and nearby McCalmont Hall. In 2013-14, McCalmont Hall was the first of the south campus residence halls to be renovated.

In April of 2019, Gov. Tony Evers visited ��Ͽ� and toured South Hall, saying he supported the renovation.

“We appreciate that the South Hall renovation has been recognized as an important project to support student success at ��Ͽ�,” said Chancellor Katherine Frank. “Student success depends on what happens both inside and outside of the classroom, lab, or studio, and this project will allow for students to live in an updated, dynamic, and appealing environment.”

Other renovation work

Planning is underway to renovate another residence hall, HKMC — Hansen, Keith, Milnes, Chinnock — at 1215 Third St. E. A preplanning study is being prepared by River Architects. No timetable for the project has been set.

A proposed renovation project awaiting UW System approval and state funding is Heritage Hall, an academic building on 10th Avenue E., east of the library.

Finding the right study strategies for your student

Supporting students as they work toward academic success is the core focus of the Academic Resource Coordinators in University Housing. ARCs help guide other students in determining the academic strategies that work best for them.

ARCs assist with creating residence hall environments conducive to living and learning. They meet individually with residents, host study night events and sponsor Signature Academic Success Events for residence hall students.

Some of the signature events planned for this semester include:

Touring the library, with an emphasis on the best study spots
Learning how to use Access Stout effectively
Communicating clearly with professors
Exploring time management methods
Developing good self-care

Has your student connected with the ARC in their residence hall?

Encourage them to seek out their ARC to discuss time management strategies, note-taking methods and good study strategies. ARCs aren’t expected to know it all, but they have a lot of tools and knowledge of where to find academic resources and can share tips with your student.
