What to expect, FAQs and packing advice

��Ͽ� has a weeklong move-in process, when your student may drop off items before returning to campus for orientation.

This fall’s move-in week is from August 22 to August 30, 2026, allowing for flexibility around you and your student’s busy summer schedule.

The weeklong process helps to reduce community congestion so that your day may be low stress and laid back. Although you won't have university staff assistance during move-in, our process allows you and your student to have time for room set up and to get any last-minute items and explore their building, campus and Menomonie.

Know what to bring for move-in day

Your student can settle into their space ahead of time and be focused to start the year!

In early August, your student will be able to select a day and time during move-in week to set up their room. Directions on scheduling a move-in time will be emailed to their ��Ͽ� email address in late July.
Your student may stay during the week. However, most students will leave campus and return for fall orientation. Students should be sure to return to campus between 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, for the orientation experience. Meal plans are not active during move-in week, however, some food service will be available.

Meet at Parking Lot 29 on the date and time selected. Your student will have one unloading space in front of their building during their two-hour move-in time. Once unloaded or by the end of your move-in time, you will move your vehicle to an approved parking lot.

If your student will be moving to campus in the spring semester, remind them to check their ��Ͽ� email in December for more information.

Fritz receives Outstanding Mid-Level Professional Award

For her dedication to enhancing the residential experience for on-campus students at ��Ͽ�, Assistant Director of Housing Dana Fritz received a regional award from her professional association.

She received the Outstanding Mid-Level Professional Award at the annual conference for the Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers, held recently in Springfield, Mo.

Fritz has been at ��Ͽ� for more than 15 years. She was nominated by Director of Housing Adam Ludwig, who has worked with her since 2010.

“Dana is the backbone of our administration operations,” Ludwig said.

Fritz coordinates the Housing assignment process for students, including all communications that families and prospective and yielded students receive, from room selection to the move-in process and accommodations along the way, as well as ensuring students have a housing assignment and the accuracy of the billing process.

In 2015, when Housing experienced an organizational overhaul, Fritz moved from being a hall director to operations coordinator with the central leadership team. She restructured multiple processes, transitioning from a model that relied on 11 hall directors to one managed by five residence life coordinators.

“Her creativity, student-focused approach, and operational acumen were critical in ensuring a smooth transition,” Ludwig said.

Now, as assistant director for Administrative Operations, Fritz challenges the Housing team to prioritize equity, whether in addressing student accommodation needs, guiding programmatic initiatives, overseeing building renovation projects or shaping departmental language.

She spearheaded the centralization of Housing’s desk operations and the creation of a new student operations manager position, supervised by the central office. This initiative allowed live-in staff to focus on students’ mental health needs without the distraction of administrative tasks.

“Dana empowers students by finding creative ways to give them meaningful roles and leverage their strengths for the benefit of the department,” Ludwig said.

The student team was named Student Staff Team of the Year at ��Ͽ�’s 2024 Leadership Awards.

In response to the pandemic in spring 2020, when the nation’s universities and colleges moved to alternative learning methods, Fritz quickly devised an efficient move-out process for the majority of campus residents while coordinating temporary housing for students who had no alternative accommodations.

Working closely with Facilities, she developed a comprehensive summer cleaning plan to prepare campus housing for fall occupancy and played a key role in transforming the move-in process to meet the requirements aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19.

“Her innovative week-long move-in strategy remains in place today due to its high satisfaction ratings and reduced strain on staff resources,” Ludwig said.

The Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers covers eight states and Manitoba, Canada.

Initiative encourages safe and healthy choices, celebrates return of students to campus

Hundreds of ��Ͽ� students who live near campus may hear a friendly knock at their door on Tuesday, Sept. 3, the day before fall semester classes begin.

Faculty and staff volunteers, including Chancellor Katherine Frank, Provost Glendalí Rodríguez and Dean of Students Sandi Scott will welcome back students living in the community as part of the university’s Knock and Talk initiative to deliver “Welcome Back” bags.

They are expected to visit about 800 students in 250 homes in the neighborhoods around campus, covering about 50 city blocks near downtown Menomonie.

Other events welcoming back students include the annual Blue Rah celebration for first-year students in the evening Sunday, Sept. 1; Backyard Bash, featuring 150 student organizations the evening of Sept. 3, on the lawn south of the Memorial Student Center; and Meet Menomonie on Wednesday, Sept. 4, the day classes begin.

“Knock and Talk is a chance for us to connect with our off-campus students, welcome them back for the year and encourage them to make safe and healthy choices, particularly about high-risk behaviors involving alcohol and controlled substances,” said Nate Kirkman, assistant dean of students who is leading the effort.

“We want to make sure that our off-campus students know that we care about them, and to remind them to be involved in the Stout community and to look out for their fellow Blue Devils,” he said.

The reusable bags will include flyers for campus resources, like Student Health Services, the Student Counseling Center and Stout Student Association; and Menomonie service agencies, like Bridge to Hope and Arbor Place. Also included will be information on safety, city ordinances, student conduct policies, voting, tenant rights, and coupons and small gifts from local businesses.

Along with greeting the students and presenting the bags, volunteers will briefly discuss the initiative.

Kirkman isn’t aware of another Universities of Wisconsin school that offers the same door-to-door initiative. He believes ��Ͽ� is unique in that the off-campus student neighborhoods are located right next to campus.

Knock and Talk, an annual event since 2016, is sponsored by the Dean of Students office, the Chancellor’s Coalition on Drugs and Alcohol, Student Counseling Center, Stout Student Association, Student Health Services, Memorial Student Center, Office of Safety and Risk Management and University Police.

Keeping Everyone Informed

The Dean of Students is one of the main points of contact for emergency incidents. Please follow the instructions below for connecting with your student or keeping the university informed of external situations that could impact your student's attendance.

Contacting a Student During a Family Crisis

Sometimes a family member might have difficulty contacting a student in a time of crisis, such as a medical emergency or a death in the family. All emergency inquiries during business hours should be directed to Dean of Students Office via phone at 715-232-1181 or via email. After hours, contact the University Police Department at 715-232-2222.

Student Crises & Absences

In the event of a short-term illness (less than 3 days) it is best for the student to contact their instructor directly. If the student is hospitalized or experiencing a difficulty that will keep them out of school for 3 days or more, please contact the Dean of Students Office via phone 715-232-1181 or via email. If a parent or family member is concerned about their student’s health or wellness, please contact the Dean of Students Office.

A notification of student absences will be issued by the Dean of Students Office. Documentation is required. This notification does not change attendance policies put in effect by the instructor and is a courtesy memo only, letting the instructor know the whereabouts of the student. Using this process to determine excused absences and/or work assignments is determined by the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to initiate contact with their instructor regarding any missed work or exams.

Campus Emergency Information

The university posts any large-scale campus emergency on our ��Ͽ� Alert Messaging System and website. Students will be notified by text message when there is an immediate threat to the health or safety of students.

Confidential Campus Health & Mental Health Resources

The Student Health Centre is conveniently located on North Campus and offers appointments for preventive and primary care needs as well as laboratory services, tuberculosis testing, and vaccines. Students can be seen for anxiety and depression and a consulting psychiatric provider is available 2 half days per month. Most services are included in the students segregated fees.

Counseling Center is staffed by licensed and trained counselors. It is located in Bowman Hall. Services offered include individual, couple, and group counseling. Alcohol education classes are offered also. There is no charge to students for this service.

YOU helps student navigate life and campus on their terms with independent goal setting, skill building, assessments and evidence based content on well-being topics. Through this web based application students can connect with a 24/7 crisis service available via call, text, or chat and can connect to Mantra teletherapy services which are available during the day, evenings, and on weekends.

��Ͽ� Hazing Policy

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The University of Wisconsin-Stout is committed to promoting a safe and healthy campus environment, where individuals are free from hazing. The purpose of this policy is to define hazing at ��Ͽ� and establish requirements for hazing education, reporting, and response in accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act.

2.0 SCOPE OF POLICY

This Policy applies to all employees, registered student organizations (RSOs), students, student groups, and individuals who volunteer with RSOs and student groups.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

3.1 REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATION (RSO):

A group, composed mainly of, and directed by, students, consisting of at least four students and an advisor, and which has filed all appropriate registration forms with the Involvement Center in the Memorial Student Center and been confirmed by the Involvement Center as meeting the eligibility criteria for registration, and is active and in good standing.

3.2 STUDENT GROUP:

A group of at least two students that is established or recognized by the university, but the group does not meet the definition of a registered student organization. Examples include, but are not limited to, athletic teams and club sports (e.g., varsity sports, intramural sports), military organizations, honor societies, musical or theatrical ensembles, university bands and club sports

4.0 STATEMENT OF POLICY

In compliance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act and Wis. Stat. § 948.51, ��Ͽ� defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act against an individual that endangers the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health of that individual for the purposes of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in any organization or group and that causes or creates a risk of physical or psychological injury, regardless of the individual’s willingness to participate.

5.0 CRITERIA

5.1 HAZING CAN INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

5.1.1 Brutality of a physical nature or the threat of bodily harm such as assault, whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to elements, sleep deprivation, confinement, or any other activity which could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.2 Forced consumption of any alcohol, food, liquid, drug, or other substance that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.3 Soliciting a person to participate in or be actively involved in the planning of any act meeting the definition of hazing.

5.1.4 Any activity that constitutes the violation of university policies and/or federal, state, or local law (including ordinances of the City of Menomonie), or that causes another person to commit such a violation.

5.1.5 Acts that degrade, humiliate, embarrass, ridicule, or isolate such as requiring servitude, taking away cell phones or other devices, not allowing class attendance, requiring costumes or other apparel unless that apparel is part of a uniform for employment or a university or athletic program, confinement, or any other activity that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.6 Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts.

5.2 REPORTING

5.2.1 Campus security authorities as defined in Institutional Clery Act Compliance are required to report incidents of hazing to the university.

5.2.2 Allegations of hazing may be reported via the University of Wisconsin-Stout Incident Reporting Form

5.3 INVESTIGATION/REFERRAL

5.3.1 The Dean of Students Office is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of hazing.

5.3.2 Individual students will follow student nonacademic disciplinary procedures outlined in Wis. Admin. Code UWS § 17

5.3.3 Registered Student Organizations will follow the disciplinary procedures outlined in Registered Student Organization Code of Conduct

5.3.4 Hazing allegations involving individuals who are not students will be referred to the appropriate office.

5.4 HAZING PREVENTION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMMING

5.4.1 Research-informed hazing prevention and awareness training will be made available to students, staff, and faculty. This training will include information about this policy and other applicable university policies, how to recognize and report hazing, and strategies for intervening when hazing is witnessed or known.

For her lifetime of outstanding student service, professional leadership and contributions to the field of campus housing across many universities and organizations, ��Ͽ� Dean of Students Sandi Scott has received the prestigious international Parthenon Society award.

Bestowed by the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International, the Parthenon is the association’s highest honor.

Scott, who is ��Ͽ�’s Title IX coordinator and a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet, was nominated for the Parthenon by Chancellor Katherine Frank, Associate Dean of Students Jacqueline Bonneville and Director of University Housing Adam Ludwig. Her nomination was championed by UW-Whitewater’s Executive Director of University Housing Terry Tumbarello.

“Sandi is known throughout the state, region and nation for her commitment to student development and the profession of student affairs. While she has been honored with awards at the state, regional and national level, no honor eclipses the fact that Sandi is recognized as a mentor and friend to many people in the field,” Frank said.

Scott has worked in the field for 38 years, with 31 years supporting students and leading professional teams as a residence hall director, director of Residence Life, assistant director of Housing and director of Housing at three University of Wisconsin campuses, beginning at UW-Whitewater before joining UW-River Falls.

“I’m humbled to have been recognized by ACUHO-I with this award. It has been a privilege and honor to be able to support students and staff as they pursue personal and professional success,” said Scott, who has been with ��Ͽ� since 2014.

Scott and other 2024 honorees were recognized at ACUHO-I’s Campus Home. LIVE! annual conference and expo in June, in Milwaukee.

ACUHO-I aims to enhance on-campus student living environments and serves more than 17,000 campus housing professionals, representing 1.2 million students around the globe. The Parthenon Award has recognized members since 2004.

A career impacting thousands across the globe

Led by Scott, Bonneville and members of the Title IX team work together to ensure equal access to education for all students.

“Sandi has been a champion on this topic and served as an expert. She is an advocate for diversity and inclusion, working with professionals and student housing staff to create an overall sense of belonging, with interactive experiences and development opportunities to learn from others and better serve our students,” said Bonneville, who worked with Scott at UW-Whitewater from 1996 to 2000, before being hired by Scott again in 2017 at ��Ͽ�.

Scott has held numerous positions in ACUHO-I, including serving on the executive board and regional cabinet and Credentialing Task Force chair. She has also served as the Wisconsin College Personnel Association president.

“Sandi serves as an inspiration to others in our field. Her expertise to drive meaningful change has led to the development and implementation of initiatives that have positively impacted thousands of professionals and students through the years, in every state and internationally,” said Tumbarello, who worked with Scott for 10 years at UW-Whitewater.

As a member of the Bridge to Hope Board of Directors, serving Dunn and Pepin counties, Scott works with the campus advocate to provide direct support to students. The Bridge to Hope provides shelter, support, information and referrals to those affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

She has been an adjunct instructor at Concordia University for more than 20 years, advising and teaching hundreds of graduate students in the Student Personnel Administration program.

A drive to do better for students, even in the darkest times

Frank began her tenure as chancellor in March 2020, just one week before universities across the nation began an alternative learning period because of COVID-19.

In response to the pandemic, Scott served with Frank as part of the leadership team and led the Student Life and Services unit, which needed to adjust operations quickly while prioritizing health and safety, as well as putting the needs of students first.

“It did not take long after my arrival to recognize Sandi's work ethic and commitment,” Frank said. “When you have an important decision to make regarding Student Affairs, you want Sandi at the table. She is skilled at making difficult decisions and taking into consideration students, staff, the institution and best practices in each instance.

“She was able to lead during this time because of her reputation on campus and within the Universities of Wisconsin, and because of the commitment of those who work for her who model collaboration and engage in productive work.”

Ludwig became director of Housing in fall 2020. He worked closely with Scott as she orchestrated ��Ͽ�’s pandemic response.

“Throughout this entire process, Sandi maintained a keen awareness of student needs and advocated for students who experienced inequities. She led with empathy, and she always fought for her staff to find balance – often at the sacrifice of her own well-being,” Ludwig said.

“Sandi is the consummate professional. She has an innate desire to learn more and do better. Even in the darkest times, she maintains her level of positivity and drive to do this work and ultimately leave the Student Affairs profession better than when she arrived in it, so many decades ago,” he added.

This Policy applies to all employees, registered student organizations (RSOs), students, student groups, and individuals who volunteer with RSOs and student groups.

5.0 CRITERIA

5.1 HAZING CAN INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

5.1.2 Forced consumption of any alcohol, food, liquid, drug, or other substance that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.3 Soliciting a person to participate in or be actively involved in the planning of any act meeting the definition of hazing.

5.1.6 Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts.

5.2 REPORTING

5.2.1 Campus security authorities as defined in Institutional Clery Act Compliance are required to report incidents of hazing to the university.

5.2.2 Allegations of hazing may be reported via the University of Wisconsin-Stout Incident Reporting Form

5.3 INVESTIGATION/REFERRAL

5.3.1 The Dean of Students Office is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of hazing.

5.3.2 Individual students will follow student nonacademic disciplinary procedures outlined in Wis. Admin. Code UWS § 17

5.3.3 Registered Student Organizations will follow the disciplinary procedures outlined in Registered Student Organization Code of Conduct

5.3.4 Hazing allegations involving individuals who are not students will be referred to the appropriate office.

Two alum offer helpful housing and roommate tips

Choosing to move off-campus is sometimes easier said than done. Your soon-to-be-junior might have questions like, Where do I live? Who do I live with? What about roommate conflict? How will I create boundaries?

There are 101 questions running through students’ minds as they make the jump from on-campus living to off-campus.

We asked two ��Ͽ� alums about their thoughts.

“Finding housing in Menomonie is easy and it’s not too expensive. Landlords can be difficult to work with, so make sure you trust your landlord before moving in. I think that it is better to live with people who you know but are not your best friends because it prevents conflict," said Olivia Satterlee, a human development and family services graduate.

As easy as renting a safe and comfortable space might be, dynamics within your student’s home are just as important. Erica Holbrook, a graphic design and interactive media graduate, shared her thoughts on setting roommate expectations. “Before moving in together, I would recommend having a meeting where everyone discusses a chore list and other general housekeeping rules. This ensures everyone is on the same page about how things will be run around the house. We all have been raised differently by our families, so our standards of living and general experiences are going to vary,” she said.

“Another idea to consider is establishing ‘quiet hours,’ just like in the dorms. If you like to stay up late studying or have a hard time sleeping when there’s sound, this makes sure you are getting the respect you deserve,” Holbrook added. “Everyone should feel comfortable and welcome in their own home, so having a conversation with your roommates about these things will hopefully help everyone get along and prevent conflicts from arising.”

While living off-campus allows for more freedom and independence, it can be hard to find a healthy mix of playtime and work time. Holbrook suggests making a daily routine. “If you’re planning on moving in with your friends, it can be really fun to always be hanging out with them because it’s like a never-ending sleepover. This can easily distract you from your homework though, so finding a healthy balance is going to be super important,” she said.

Holbrook suggests students eliminate distractions and find a favorite place outside their home to concentrate on schoolwork. Maybe it’s the Memorial Student Center. the library or a café downtown.

When your student makes the choice to live off-campus, setting boundaries and prioritizing time and space for academics can be the secrets to their success.

Ruch receives Support Staff Recognition award from Wisconsin College Personnel Association

In the Dean of Students Office at ��Ͽ�, Executive Assistant Karrin Ruch supports student success in a variety of ways.

It was Ruch, however, who received support recently when she was nominated for and received the Support Staff Recognition award from the Wisconsin College Personnel Association for her professionalism and dedication.

Ruch thanked her colleagues for nominating her and letters of support. “I felt very honored. It really made me feel like the work I do on campus is valued and appreciated. I couldn’t do the work without them and feel fortunate to be part of the Dean of Students team.

“I enjoy being part of a team that works great together to ensure that our students are heard and supported. I truly feel that I am the lucky one who gets to work on an amazing campus with the best students and supportive co-workers,” said Ruch, of Menomonie, who has worked at ��Ͽ� for 11 years.

Ruch is an initial point of contact for students who need to meet with the dean, associate dean or assistant dean. She also handles background checks for students in the Study Abroad program and for other outside agencies, as well as sending out student absence notices, serving on employee search committees and more.

“Karin is truly the ‘face’ of the office. She excels at providing exemplary customer service and in doing whatever is needed to support student success,” said Dean of Students Sandi Scott. “Because of Karrin and her commitment to ��Ͽ�, the Dean of Students team and to students, we function more efficiently and more effectively.”

Jacqueline Bonneville, associate dean, said Ruch “has a perfect disposition and ability to show warmth and a calm and reassuring presence to everyone who walks through our door (virtually or in person).”

Along with other duties, Ruch co-manages the Helping Hand Food+ Pantry for students in the Administration Building. She manages the inventory, assists with volunteers and has worked to promote the pantry and receive additional funding to supports its efforts.

“This experience has been an absolute blessing. I have met lots of wonderful students and learned a lot about food insecurities on our campus. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to assist with the pantry and do my best to make sure it’s a welcome space for all students,” Ruch said.

This is the third time in three years a ��Ͽ� employee has received a WCPA honor. Ian Foley and Adam Ludwig, both from University Housing, received the Nora McGuire Outstanding Professional honor in spring 2023 and 2021, respectively.

WCPA formed nearly 50 years ago. Its mission is to provide “professional development for higher education professionals serving students in Wisconsin,” according to its website.

Family-oriented activities Oct. 6-8 followed by homecoming events, including parade and football game Oct. 14

For Blue Devil fans it’s pure autumn bliss — nine consecutive days in October to celebrate at ��Ͽ� with a variety of activities for students, families, alumni and the community.

The festivities kick off with Stout Proud Weekend from Friday, Oct. 6, through Sunday, Oct. 8, geared to families and supporters of students but is open to everyone. Then, it’s homecoming week, highlighted by the annual downtown parade and football game Saturday, Oct. 14.

All of the events are open to the public. Many are free, but some require tickets.

Stout Proud Weekend

Stout Proud Weekend formerly was held in April as Family Weekend.

Events Friday include indoor rock wall climbing from 3 to 9 p.m. at Stout Adventures, dinner at Merle M. Price Commons cafeteria ($5 for guests, card only), a photo booth, the movie “Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles” from 6 to 9 p.m. in Applied Arts and a women’s volleyball match against UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse.

A full day of events is scheduled for Saturday:

11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Stout Proud Picnic, featuring the Bear Creek Band, on the lawn south of the Memorial Student Center. Meal tickets can be purchased in advance. The event also will feature tie-dye and caricature artists
Noon-4 p.m., Rock Wall Climbing at Stout Adventures
1:30-2:30 p.m., Stout Secrets, at the Terrace, Memorial Student Center
2 p.m., Football Game: ��Ͽ� vs. UW-Oshkosh, Williams Stadium
3 p.m., Roommate Game, at the Terrace, Memorial Student Center
5-7 p.m., Dinner at Merle Price Commons
6 p.m. & 7:30 p.m., Bingo, at the Terrace, Memorial Student Center

On Sunday, the ��Ͽ� Antique Auto Club will hold a car show from 9 a.m. to noon in Lot 14, west of Bowman Hall. Canvas Painting and Coffee, with scones, will be led by art education students from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Terrace in the Memorial Student Center. A brunch is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at Price Commons.

Replacing the former Family Weekend in April is Destination Weekend, April 5-6, 2024, kicking off a month of special events on campus.

Homecoming parade, game, Glow Run

Homecoming week is capped off Saturday with the annual downtown parade and football game.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. at 10th Avenue E. and Broadway streets. The route goes north on Broadway, east on Main Street then south on Third Street E. through campus toward the Sports and Fitness Center, ending at 13th Avenue.

Community organizations, including school groups, businesses and nonprofits, can participate in the parade. Register here.

The homecoming football game against UW-Stevens Point kicks off at 1 p.m. at Williams Stadium. Also, a women’s soccer game against UW-Platteville begins at 2 p.m. at Nelson Field.

Tailgate boxes and Stout Proud digital swag are available for purchase to show support of the Blue Devils. Proceeds from the sales of the tailgate boxes support the ��Ͽ� Student Emergency Fund.

University Recreation’s annual Glow Run, a 2-mile fun run through campus, is at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, beginning and ending at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Homecoming alumni events

Two special events for alumni are planned.

An event Oct. 13 at Lucette Brewing begins with alumni awards from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a social and pizza from 6 to 8 p.m. Register here.

The Alumni Association will recognize Joe Pregont, 1981 graduate, with the Distinguished Alumnus award and Danielle Goss, 2013 graduate, with the Trailblazer Alumna award.

On Saturday, Breakfast at the Buck features a free breakfast for alumni from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Silver Dollar, 315 Main St. E. Register here.

Homecoming student events

Student-focused events during the week begin with an ice cream social from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at the amphitheater of the Memorial Student Center.

Blue Devil Productions is hosting several weeklong student events, including a Banner Battle to show ��Ͽ� pride; a Food Drive Battle to support Helping Hand Food+ Pantry; and the annual medallion hunt. The annual Soapbox Derby, featuring student-made cars, will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Second Street W. and Wilson Avenue.

Students also can play glow-in-the-dark Bingo and take part in a chalking competition. Comedian and balloon artist John Cassidy will perform from 8 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Great Hall of the student center.

Students have a Renaissance theme — Renai-Stout — for homecoming week events.

Faculty, staff plan to visit about 250 homes Sept. 5; other events celebrate return of students

Hundreds of ��Ͽ� students who live near campus will get a special welcome to the fall semester on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Faculty and staff volunteers, including Chancellor Katherine Frank and Provost Glendalí Rodríguez, plan to knock on the doors of about 800 students in 250 off-campus homes, covering about 50 city blocks near downtown Menomonie.

The volunteers will welcome students back and remind them to be safe and healthy during the 2023-24 academic year. They also will drop off reusable bags filled with flyers about campus resources like Student Health Services, the Student Counseling Center and Stout Student Association; and Menomonie service agencies, like Bridge to Hope and Arbor Place.

The bags also will have information about health and safety, city ordinances, student conduct policies and tenant rights, as well as coupons and small gifts from local businesses and other entities.

Other events welcoming back students include the annual Blue Rah celebration for first-year students in the evening Sunday, Sept. 3, followed by comedian and magician Nick Diffatte at 9:15 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center; and the Backyard Bash featuring 150 student organizations from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, on the lawn south of the Memorial Student Center.

Classes begin Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Assistant Dean of Students Nate Kirkman, who coordinates Knock and Talk, isn’t aware of another UW System school that organizes a similar door-to-door initiative.

“We want to connect with our off-campus students, welcome them back and encourage them to make safe and healthy choices, particularly about high-risk behaviors involving alcohol and controlled substances,” Kirkman said.

“We care about our off-campus students and want them to be involved in the Stout community,” Kirkman said. “We encourage Stout students to be positive bystanders and take care of and look out for their fellow Blue Devils.”

He believes ��Ͽ� is unique in that the student neighborhoods are adjacent to campus.

The 800 Knock and Talk welcome bags are being stuffed by volunteer students participating in the Stoutward Bound program.

Knock and Talk, an annual event since 2016, is sponsored by the Dean of Students office, Student Counseling Center, Stout Student Association, Student Health Services, Memorial Student Center, Office of Safety and Risk Management and University Police.

Foley, residence life coordinator, receives award from Wisconsin College Personnel Association

Ian Foley, a residence life coordinator at ��Ͽ� with a passion for helping students, has been recognized by the Wisconsin College Personnel Association for his impact in the student services field.

Foley, of Menomonie, recently received the Nora McGuire Outstanding Professional Award. The annual honor goes to a member and midlevel professional who has “demonstrated initiative, creativity and innovation in their work” along with other qualities and accomplishments, WCPA said.

“Ian’s passion and commitment to student growth, learning and development is beyond exemplary,” said Dean of Students Sandi Scott. “He is a tireless student advocate, committed to ensuring processes, policies and procedures that impact students are comprehensive and in the best interest of students. He intentionally seeks ways to improve the student experience.”

Foley, who has worked at ��Ͽ� for six years, focuses every day on supporting students.

“I spend a great deal of my time providing crisis response to students in distress, working with students when they need social or academic support and either helping out at my level or referring them up to those who need it,” Foley said.

“I enjoy helping improve someone else’s quality of life. If someone has a less than ideal quality of life or living situation, they might not be at their best self to participate fully in class. It’s nice to help folks and give them resources or advice to get them to a place where they feel they learn and enjoy their time in college,” he said.

Foley has developed two manuals for student staff in University Housing, was part of the implementation team for the EAB Navigate student retention program and is past chair of the campus Safety and Workers Compensation committee.

He has a master’s in higher education administration from Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., and a bachelor’s in political science and communication studies from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He is a native of East Stroudsburg, Pa.

“Ian sees the broader picture of campuswide mechanisms and opportunities to better serve our students. He has an analytical mindset balanced with an understanding of human dynamics that leads to positive relationships and positive results for our students,” said Darrin Witucki, director of University Centers and former WCPA board member.

Jacqueline Bonneville, associate dean of students, said Foley “demands we be better for our students. He continually thinks about ways we can do our work differently, reach more students and be more efficient in the work we do. He doesn’t shy away from difficult conversations and disagreements. Understanding that helps us get to the best solution. There is nothing Ian won’t volunteer to do. We could use more Ians in this world.”

Foley will begin a new role soon at ��Ͽ� as compliance specialist and youth and minors protection coordinator.

This is the second time in three years a ��Ͽ� employee has received the Nora McGuire Outstanding Professional honor. Adam Ludwig, director of University Housing, won in 2021.
