five-year academic roadmap for a polytechnic institution moving at full speed? Ͽ Provost Glendalí Rodríguez tackles that question in an episode of TRANSFORMED, a podcast produced by Higher Digital. In a conversation with host Joe Gottlieb titled “Comprehensive Academic Planning in the Age of Polytechnic Velocity,” Rodriguez walks through how her team built a forward-looking plan that balances ambitious academic goals with the operational realities of running a university.

The episode digs into the practical side of strategic planning: using data to guide decisions, leading collaboratively across departments, and turning big-picture goals into initiatives people can act on. Rodriguez also shares insights on managing change, strengthening industry partnerships, and keeping academic programs responsive to a fast-changing job market – all hallmarks of Ͽ’s polytechnic approach to higher education.

Whether you’re navigating your own institution’s strategic plan or just curious how a provost approaches change at this scale, the conversation offers an honest look at both the challenges and the wins along the way. Cervenka School of Engineering, tackle that question with host Matt Kirchner on The TechEd Podcast.

In this episode, “Groundbreaking Automation Leadership Degree is a Fast Track to Industry 4.0,” the conversation centers on the new Automation Leadership degree. The first program of its kind in the United States, the Automation Leadership degree was built to give students both the technical know-how and the business skills needed to lead a company through digital transformation.

The episode explores how the program blends hands-on training in robotics, PLCs, CNC, control systems, sensors and other industrial technologies with coursework in project management, lean manufacturing, and systems integration – pairing technical depth with leadership readiness in a way few degrees attempt. Frank and Ding also discuss how the program reflects broader shifts in higher education, with more flexible on-ramps and off-ramps for students. Notably, up to 88 credits toward the degree can come from Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA) credentials, making the path faster and more accessible for high schoolers, community college students, and working professionals alike.

By building the program around existing SACA industry certification standards rather than starting from scratch, Ͽ has created a degree that’s directly aligned with what manufacturers actually need – one that other SACA member institutions can plug into through articulation agreements. Listen to Frank and Ding unpack how this new degree fits into Ͽ’s polytechnic mission and what it means for the future of manufacturing education.

<section class="section section-pad--bottom content-text" 235946>

<iframe src="https://www.buzzsprout.com/1340257/13594421-groundbreaking-automation-leadership-degree-is-a-fast-track-to-industry-4-0-chancellor-katherine-frank-and-dr-david-ding-uw-stout?client_source=small_player&iframe=true&referrer=https://www.buzzsprout.com/1340257/13594421-groundbreaking-automation-leadership-degree-is-a-fast-track-to-industry-4-0-chancellor-katherine-frank-and-dr-david-ding-uw-stout.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-13594421&player=small" loading="lazy" width="100%" height="200" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" title="The TechEd Podcast, Reframing Higher Education: A Connected Model for Colleges and Universities - Dr. Katherine Frank & The Stout trio, and others involved in the project, are pushing to change that through a build-based education experience that teaches students about cultural innovation.

To make sure the learning sticks, the project deliverable is embracing the absurd with inspiration from Russell E. Oakes (aka "Professor I.M. Nuts").

Sara Brewer ('17), a graduate of the professional communication and emerging media program, discovered the 19th-century-born ad man from Waukesha, whose overactive innovation led to a legacy of odd inventions and theatrics. Among more than 50 creations, Oakes's Spaghetti Aid was part hand beater, part fork and 100% absurd. It also made for a perfect oddity to help younger students explore iterative design, Wisconsin history and cultural evolution through the maker lens.

Since Brewer's initial research, Stout students have played a important hands-on role in the project's development—doing research, creating content, designing and redesigning Oakes's prototype, testing and developing the process, and working with elementary students. DeCosta, an industrial and product design major from St. Paul, finished version 2.0 of the initial redesign in Spring 2023.

Listen in at 1:14:00 when Ogden, Astwood and DeCosta discuss the inspiration and development of their project.

<iframe allowfullscreen allowtransparency="true"
